Legal Adviser

BACKGROUND
To provide first class legal advice to the Global Markets business that operates out of Dubai and covers the MENA region. The Global Markets business is currently involved with and requires support for currency and interest rate swaps negotiation, Islamic Finance documentation structuring and negotiation. There are also two debt programmes, one conventional and one Islamic, which would require support as the debt capital markets desk is very active. Additionally, there is an equities desk and broker entity which requires assistance from time to time.
Available, flexible and willing to provide assistance to the other businesses in Dubai and provide support to the MEM LGA team as and when required.

PURPOSE OF THE JOB
Impact on the Business
The role will entail being one of the primara legal contacts for the Global Markets business based in Dubai providing support to the business across the MENA region and across Global Markets product lines.

Customers / Stakeholders
Key stakeholders will be (i) primarily the Global Markets business but will include other businesses based in Dubai (ii) other relevant support functions and (iii) peers within legal in particular the legal team in Dubai and the Global Markets legal team in London.

Teamwork
This is an important role and will require teamwork skills to establish a collaborative relationship with other lawyers in Dubai, the MENA region, London, Paris, Hong Kong and New York as well as with other lawyers elsewhere in the Group.
The role will require contribution and support for the other members of the legal team in Dubai, the Global Markets business and the other product lines in Dubai.

Operational Effectiveness & Control
As with any legal role a critical element of the role is to protect HSBC’s franchise.

MAJOR CHALLENGES
The major challenges will be to (i) establish an effective relationship with the Global Markets business in Dubai (ii) effectively operate within his/her team (iii) establish effective, collegiate relationships with his/her peers in the legal group (particularly in Dubai and London).

The role will require strong influencing and communication skills, balancing time management and personal organization.

Skills

The successful candidate will ideally:
• be a common law qualifed lawyer
• have sufficient number of years of experience practicing law in the relevant field
• have strong influencing skills and be able to influence people in a complex organisational environment
• have excellent judgement and commercial awareness
• be a proactive self starter with the ability to take ownership and follow through on delivery
• be a confident and clear communicator (written and oral)
• be a flexible team player across the Legal Function
• be customer focussed with a positive attitude
